The devotion to Our Lady of the Snows originated in Rome, Italy, and commemorates the miraculous August snowfall that, according to tradition, revealed the location where the Basilica of Saint Mary Major was to be built. The feast of Our Lady of the Snows is celebrated each year on August 5.
