What is Padre Pio the Patron Saint of?

Saint Padre Pio is the patron saint of Healing, Suffering, and Pain.

Many saints have definitely had their fair share of pain and suffering, but Padre Pio earned the title of the patron saint of suffering by truly exemplifying how to suffer with grace. He viewed his suffering as a transformational gift that brought him closer to and united him with Christ.

He was one of the holy saints blessed with the stigmata (wounds of Christ). The Lord blessed him with the miraculous abilities of healing, the ability to read souls, prophecy, and bilocation (being in more than one place at once) that he utilized throughout his entire life to unite others to Christ.

The (Summarized) Padre Pio Story:

Padre Pio dedicated his life to God when he was a mere 5 years old. Pio began receiving visions and messages from God at a very young age. He continued having apparitions of God’s healing power and felt a call to become a Capuchin Friar at the age of 15.

Padre Pio experienced a lot of extreme suffering and circumstances. He was drafted for World War I, but was discharged because of his poor health. He fought for his life through a terrible case of tuberculosis. His suffering did not stop him from doing the Lord's work, but united him closer to Christ.

Through Padre Pio's humility and unwaivering faith, Christ was able to perform hundreds of miracles through Padre Pio.

Pio's life mirrors Jesus' life in a lot of ways - the suffering, miracles, unwaivering faith in the Lord, and countless people flocking to meet them or be near them. We are all called to be like Christ - I think we can agree that Padre Pio set the bar pretty high.

Pio’s strength and faith was tested yet again when he was granted the painful gift of the stigmata. The stigmata is the given term for when someone experiences the crucifixion wounds of Christ.

These painful wounds are a gift bestowed upon holy saints to unite them closer to Christ by allowing them to feel Christ's pain He felt on the cross.

Padre Pio remained humble throughout the rest of his life, keeping many of his miracles and visions to himself, yet spent every day worshiping and praising God through performing hundreds of Masses and miracles.

He died in 1968 and was canonized a saint in 2002 by Saint Pope John Paul II.
